In the period 2001-2005, the GDP per capital growth rate of Dong Hoi was 12.5%, and small scale and craft industry increased by 24.1%. In the structure of GDP, industry and construction account for 35.5%, service 50.9% and agro-forestry 13.6%. The density is still shifting to service and industry in the economic structure.
To attract investment to develop production, create jobs and increase income sources for the budget Quang Binh has promoted the construction of infrastructure, improvement of administrative procedure, creation of an attractive and clear investment environment. On October 17, 2006, the Provincial People’s Committee of Quang Binh issued the Decision No 2808/QD-UBND approving the List of Projects for Investment in Quang Binh to 2010. The list consists of 30 projects which are the basis for the Province to call for investment and promote the investment into industry, small scale industry, aquatic product, tourism and service, etc. With encouraging and favorable policies, and favorable and clear investment environment, Quang Binh has become one of the most attractive destinations of foreign as well as domestic investors.

Quang Binh is the transition area of the cultures of all the regions along the North- South and East- West directions of the country. It is also where there are many great and magnificient natural landscapes, which can facilitate the development of many kinds of tourism such as traveling, exploring, resting, studying, and eco-tourism.
Quang Binh has 4 famous landscapes namely Deo Ngang, Ly Hoa, Nhat Le Estuary and Phong Nha. There some fabulous beaches and resorts such as Nhat Le Estuary, Gianh Seaport, Hon La Bay, Da Nhay Beach, Bau Tro Relics. Especially, Quang Binh has the large Karst Phong Nha-Ke Bang- Him Nam No (approximately 200,000 ha) which is typical not only in Vietnam but the whole world. This Karst area with over 300 big and small caves is called “The Kingdom of Caves”. It latents in itshelf strange things that are attractive to explorers, scientists and tourists. Phong Nha Cavern has a system of historic and cultural relics of many eras such as primeval archeological relics, Cham historic and cultural relics and ther relics of the American resistance war. The Phong Nha Cavern is considered the most valuable cavern in the world with the 4 best things namely deepest and longest underground river of 13,969 meters long, highest and largest cave entrance, largest and most beautiful sand-bank, and most magnificient and fanciful stalactite. In July 2003, Phong Nha- Ke Bang National Garden was recognized a world natural heritage by the UNESCO.
Quang Binh has 140 listed and evaluated relics in which the most prominent ones are the group of relics and landscapes in Dong Hoi City such as Dao Duy Tu Rampart, Quang Binh Quan, and the famous historic relic and landscape of Ho Village (in the route of the Ho Chi Minh Trail).
Competitive advantages
Quang Binh has a coastline of 116.04 km long with 5 estuaries, Nhat Le and Gianh Ports, and Hon La Bay with deep water and out of wind favorable for ship anchoring and logistic services for pisciculture. There is a large fishing ground with a reserves of approximately 99,000 tons rich in species (1650 species) in which there are rare and precious ones such as lobster, sugpo prawn, cuttle-fish, coral, etc. Quang Binh has a quite large water area that can be used for aquaculture (15,000 ha). Its salty and PH degree are suitable for aquaculture for export. Besides, the long coastline is so favorable for rearing lobster in the sand. All these factors create for Quang Binh a competitive advantage in developing aquaculture.
Quang Binh has many material mines with great reserves for construction material production such as limestone, white sand, kaolin, construction stone, pottery, clay, etc. The works of construction material production have been operated such as 20400-ton cement standing kiln, 80 million tunnel brick, ceramic brick 1.1 m3 a year, construction stone 100,000 m3 a year, shape-fixed aluminum bar 2700 tones a year. Some projects are being invested such as Giang River Cement Factory with annual capacity of 1.4 tons (2.8 tons in phase 2), Glass Factory, Construction Pottery Factory, Block Brick Factory, Hygiene Pottery Factory, Glass Brick Factory and Kaolin Factory, etc.
