Geographical location

Quang Binh, a coastal province in the North Central of Vietnam, is 500 km far from Hanoi to the South. The Province has a 116.04-km coastline in the East and shares a border line of 201.87 km long in the West. Quang Binh has Hon La Seaport, National Highway I, Ho Chi Minh Highway, North-South Railroad, and National Highway 12A passing Cha Lo Border Gate and connecting the Province to Laos and Northeast Thailand. There are some roads stretching from the East to the West to Laos such as Provincial Roads 16 and 20, and Road 10 that lead to some other secondary border gates. These are favorable condition to promote the relationship with Laos, Thailand and the regional countries.

Terrain

The terrain of Quang Binh is narrow and sloping from the West to the East. 85% of the natural area is hilly and mountainous. The total area is divided into such basic forms as highly mountainous region, hilly and midland region, delta region and coastal sand region.

Climate

Quang Binh is located in the monsoon tropical climate, always influenced by the climate of the North and the South and divided into 2 clear seasons namely the rainy season from September to March of the next year. It rains the most in September, October and November. The annual average rainfall is from 2000 to 2300 mm. The dry season starts from April to August. June, July and August have the highest degree.  

Land resource

The natural area is 8052km in2  in which the hilly and mountainous area occupies 170,000 ha. This is the favorable feature for the development of industrial trees, forestry and breeding. The Province has 633,000 ha of forestry land in which 447,873 ha is the natural one with many primeval forests and the coverage level of 62%. The coastal sandy land is of large area which is favorable for aquaculture, afforestation and constructions of industrial zones, economic zones, tourism areas and resorts.

Land resource is divided into 2 main types: Alluvial soil in the delta area and feralite soil in the mountainous and hilly area. There are 15 kinds of soil with such main groups as sandy soil group, alluvial soil group and yellow and red soil group of which the yellow and red one occupies over 80% natural area (mainly in the Western hilly and mountainous area), sandy soil 5.9% and alluvium soil 2.8%.

Fauna and flora resource

Quang Binh is located in the Bac Truong Son bio-diversity area where there is an diversified and unique fauna and flora system. The typical bio-diversity area in Quang Binh is the Karst Phong Nha- Ke Bang area.

As for fauna, there are 493 species with 48 species of reptile, 297 species of bird, 61 species of fish, etc. Some precious and rare species such as Trachypithecus hatinhensis, bear, tiger, pseudoryx nghetinhensis, muntiacus vuquangensis , white-tail pheasant, and phasianidae, etc. 

As for flora diversification: The forest area is 486,688 ha with 17,397 ha of resin pipe. The flora of Quang Binh is diversified in terms of species. There some precious kinds of wood such as iron wood, sindora wood, ebony, huynh, pine wood and many kinds of rattan and bamboo and other precious forest products. Quang Binh is one of the provinces that have high wood reserves of the country with the wood deserves of 31 million m3.

River and sea resources

The coastline of Quang Binh has many landscapes. The continental shelf with an area of 2.6 times bigger than the Province’s area creates a large fishing ground with reserves of approximately 100,000 tons. 40,000 tons can be exploited annually. The seafood is rich in species (1650 species) with such precious and rare ones as lobster, cutlefish, sugpo prawn, holothurian, squid, and coral. 

The coastline with beautiful beaches enables Quang Binh to develop an integrated sea economy. The system of rocky mountain ranges to the sea creating so many seaports, beaches and excellent resorts such as Nhat Le Estuary, Gianh Seaport, Hon La Bay, and Da Nhay Beach, etc.

Besides, Quang Binh has a quite big system of rivers and streams with a density of 0.8 – 1.1 km/km2. There are 5 main rivers namely Roon, Gianh, Ly Hoa, Dinh and Nhat Le. There are approximately 160 natural and artificial lakes with an estimated water capacity of 243.3 million m3.

Mineral resources

Quang Binh has many kinds of mineral with high reserves such as gold, lead, titanium, pyrite, zinc, etc, some non-metal minerals such as kaolin, limestone, marble, granite, etc, with reserves of billions tons, and quartz with reserves of 30 million m3. The non-metal minerals enable the development of the industries of cement, pottery, glass and other construction materials. Quang Binh has some mineral water streams especially Bang Stream with the boiling degree of heat of 1050C, which is a favorable condition for the soft drink industry and healthcare. A complex of tourism, sanatorium and eco-tourism can be built there.
