Population and labor The population of Quang Binh in 2004 was 829,800 people. Quang Binh has a big labor force with 433,618 people accounting for approximately 52.26% of the population. As for the quality of the labor force, according to the census in 1/4/1999 there were 4676 people of junior college level, 6042 of graduate and post-graduate level. The trained labor force consisted of 33,000 people equivalent to 8% of the population.   Socio-cultural situation Quang Binh has 6 districts and 1 city of which there are 2 mountainous districts. There are 159 communes, wards and towns. Quang Binh is a civilized land with the Archeological Sites of Bau Tro, Hoa Binh and Dong Son, the historical relics suchs as Quang Binh Quan, Luy Thay, citadels and ramparts of Trinh and Nguyen Dynasties, famous geographic names in the 2 resistance wars of the country suchs as Cu Nam, Canh Duong, Cha Lo, Cong Troi, Xuan Son, Long Dai, especially the Ho Chi Minh Trail. There are many famous men of great learning and talent in the fields of military, culture and society such as Duong Van An, Nguyen Huu Canh, Nguyen Ham Ninh, Vo Nguyen Giap and many other outstanding people. These are the favorable conditions to exploit and build a cultural tourism route visiting historic relics and war evidences of Quang Binh. Education and training Quang Binh has a relatively synchronous infrastructure for regular education. The Province has total 640 schools and training sites with many schools of national standard. The system of vocational training center of Quang Binh has had developed remarkably in terms of both quality and quantity. The junior colleges and vocational schools are being invested intensively and extensively. The quality of the lecturers has been improved to meet the demand of training management staff and skilled workers for the modernization and industrialization of the Province.  Transportation Quang Binh has a relatively favorable traffic and transportation system. The North-South Railway Route, National Highway 1A, and Ho Chi Minh Highway passes through most of the the residential and potential areas. National Highway 12A connects Quang Binh, Central Laos and Northwest Thailand. The inner-province road and waterway systems also facilitate the economic development. Dong Hoi Station is one of the main stations in the North-South Railway Route.  Seaway and waterway transportation is an advantage of Quang Binh. The Province has a coastline of 116 km long with 5 estuaries and 3 seaports of Nhat Le, Gianh and Hon La. Especially, Hon La Seaport has an area of 4 km2, depth of 15m and islands around to stop wind. Ships with loading capacity of 3 to 5 ten thousand tons can go in and out and berth favorably. Nhat Le Bridge connecting Central Dong Hoi to Bao Ninh makes the architecture of the city more beautiful and facilitates Bao Ninh Eco-tourism Complex to attract tourists. Dong Hoi Airport is being improved to welcome light passenger aircrafts. Post and telecommunication The Province has 45 post offices and 85 commune level post offices. While the traditional services are maintained, other new ones are developed such as consigned post service, flower message, express mailer sending (EMS), non-address mailer, chuyển tiền nhanh, tiết kiệm bưu điện được phát triển, public Internet service. The telecommunication is developing rapidly with the direction of automation with high capacity and high transmission quality. New  services are provided widely such as inter-province channel renting service, inside-region channel, and ADSL Internet fast access service. The mobile information network system has been covered every region of the Province. Electrical power The electrical power industry of Quang Binh has created a system of electrical sources that is able to serve the need of production and economic development. The average annual development speed of the electrical yield is from 15 to 20%.  The electrical wire of Quang Binh has been connected to the National Electrical Wire. Dong Hoi City has a 220/110/10KV-2 x 63MVA transformer station, the station of the national electrical system supplying electricity for some regional provinces such as Quang Binh, Quang Tri and Thua Thien Hue. Besides, the electrical industry of Quang Binh has started to participate in telecommunication and information technology by supplying inner-province information mobile system, national information mobile system, international information mobile system, stationed wireless telephone system using the CDMA450 technology, services of renting inter-province channels, and the ADSL broadband Internet accessing services.   Water supply system Dong Hoi City has 2 main water suppliers namely Bau Tro Water Supply Factory and Phu Vinh Water Supply Factory that can sufficiently supply water for life and production. The  Phu Vinh Water Supply Factory is being invested by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to build a a water supplying system for life and production. Banking Apart from the branch of the State Bank, Quang Binh has 5 state commercial banks, 1 branch of the Central Credit Fund and 18 people’s credit funds with 53 transaction places of provincial to commune levels that mobilize and lend capital. The system of banks and credit organizations has developed with the orientation of industrialization, modernization, application of information technology in the operation, increase of utilities for customers, and creating favorable conditions and opportunities for economic sectors to approach capital sources. The specialist skills of guaranty, discount and foreign exchange, etc, are performed with simple and favorable procedures to promote international trade and investment. Trade, tourism and hotel Domestic trade ensures the supply of goods for production and consumption and contributes to the stability of the market prices. The export turnover of the period 2001-2005 increased by 31% annually. The density of direct export increased from 52% to 91%. The exported goods that developed strongly were aquatic and seafood products, rubber, titanium ore and wood.
